Proyecto Horizonte is a non-profit and non-governmental organization based in Bolivia.
We started Proyecto Horizonte in 2004 as a privately funded organization with the goal to lift the community we serve from extreme poverty to middle class. At Proyecto Horizonte we apply a well thought program integrating education, healthcare and community development. Proyecto Horizonte incorporates best practice approaches and combines them with own ideas to a holistic approach. We know that we can achieve the maximum sustainable impact if we cover all aspects in the community. The success of the first years of operations is remarkable.
Proyecto Horizonte has no operating expenses outside Bolivia. The work outside of Bolivia is done through a dedicated group of volunteers.
To ensure an efficient flow of donations, we founded the “Verein zur Förderung des Kindergartens in Ushpa-Ushpa e.V.“ in Germany. This association is recognized as a non-profit charity and its sole function is to support the project. In the U.S.A. we work with the Bolivian Charity Foundation (BCF). The BCF is a registered 501 c3 charitable organization. Both associations work with us, without imposing any charges. This means that 100% of the donations that are collected benefit the project. Our only costs are the bank transfer fees! We have also collaborated with charitable organizations in other countries.
The ‘cost per child’ is very low at approx. US$15 per child per month. This includes education, the food program for the day care center, and all the community programs and services. There is some support from the local government ,but the majority of the costs are covered through private donations.
In addition, over the years, parents have increased their contributions as well. The community now contributes to about 15% of the expenses, from the initial 5% in previous years. Nevertheless, there is a needs based grant program to ensure that no child is left behind.
The progress so far is impressive but this is just the start. The ultimate goal, to lift the community out of poverty and to transfer the responsibility for the program to them is feasible within one generation. However, this goal can only be accomplished with the support from our donors and friends.
